Welcome the Thornbergs!
This week we are privileged to welcome our new Rector and his family to the fellowship of the Church of Our Saviour!
The Rev. Jeffrey Thornberg will preach his inaugural sermon this Sunday at 7:45 a.m. and at a combined service with our English and Mandarin congregations at 10:15 a.m. This is also the occasion of our annual “Our Saviour Sunday” which begins our fall program year.
Father Jeff brings with him his wife Annie and three girls: Eleanor, who is seven and is a new student in second grade at Coolidge School; Harriet, who is four and is a new student at our Child’s Garden School; and baby Frances, who is 15 months.
Jeff and Annie met in graduate school at General Seminary in New York City. They both graduated with Master of Divinity degrees and both were ordained priests soon thereafter. Jeff had received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Texas, where he had pursued a career as a pharmacist before deciding on a different kind of healing ministry under the call of God. Instead of dispensing prescription medications he will be dispensing prescribed wafers at the high altar!
Annie’s high calling for the foreseeable future is to be a Mom to the Thornbergs’ three daughters. While Jeff is facilitating and celebrating the Eucharist, she will be in charge of facilitating and celebrating graduations and the nurture of their children. The Thornbergs have been married for 10 years.
Jeff was born in Phoenix and grew up in New Hampshire and Ohio and Texas. In 2005, he graduated with high honors from the University of Texas in Austin. In 2008 he received his Masters of Divinity from The General Theological Seminary in New York City. Following his ordination at the age of 24 he became Curate for a church in New Hampshire. Then he went on to become Associate Rector at a church in Indianapolis before becoming Rector at Holy Trinity Church in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Jeff enjoys biking and hiking and ice hockey. He is a fan of the Boston Bruins and a soon-to-be fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers. In addition to his fan and fatherhood responsibilities (both at home and at church!), Jeff has completed his coursework for a Doctor of Ministry degree in congregational development. He expects to graduate from Seabury Seminary in 2020.
Our Senior Warden Juli Kennedy states “I am so excited to welcome Jeff and his family as they begin their journey with Church of Our Saviour. I look with anticipation to see how Jeff will help us grow in God’s love and share that love with all whom we meet. Jeff has an abundance of energy that will be used to develop the opportunities that Church of Our Saviour provides. Blessings to Jeff as he begins his ministry with this wonderful Church!”
